Abstract
There is increasing interest among policy makers and researchers in the relationship between migration and development in Middle and Low Income Countries. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the impact of migration on economies of origin and destination areas, especially in Asia and Africa. This paper focuses on one of the most significant corridors of international migration in Australia – that from Eastern Indonesia to the Malaysian state of Sabah – and assesses its economic impact on both origin and destination. It draws upon a survey of Indonesian migrant workers in Sabah and their employers as well as a number of in-depth interviews with key informants. The economic impacts are assessed as are the barriers which are preventing the full economic benefits of migration being realised in both origin and destination areas. This is used as a basis for discussing a number of policy intervention suggestions.
