Choosing not to mother? childfree and childless women and their contribution to fertility decline in Malaysia

Abstract: In Malaysia, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has declined to 1.6 births per woman (2024), which is below the replacement level of 2.1. Over the past decade, the world has experienced significant demographic and cultural changes, particularly in family structures, including declining fertility rates and shifting norms around marriage. Globally, there is a growing trend of individuals choosing not to have children – not due to infertility or delayed marriage, but based on personal choice. This study aims to explore the contribution of childfree and childless women to fertility decline in Malaysia. The findings show that childfree and childless women experience non-motherhood differently, with childfree women often associating it with autonomy and emotional fulfilment, while childless women experience greater emotional vulnerability and social pressure.

Abstract: Malaysia demographic transition: youth population shrinking, senior population growing and Malaysia entering an ageing society. Senior live longer, creating higher dependency ratios. For marriage and family trends there are declining marriage rates, delayed family formation. Divorce rates increasing, reshaping household stability. For household structure it shift from extended families to smaller nuclear households. Rising living costs discourage larger families. For fertility, Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is now below the replacement level (2.1)

Coconut water: a natural remedy unlocking new hope for male fertility

Abstract: Male infertility are the inability of a men to impregnate a female after 1 year of unprotected intercourse. It high course of modern drugs and techniques to heal and involve ethical concerns. Then rely in alternative remedies derived from medicinal plants. Objectives of this study are to evaluate the potential of coconut water to support reproductive health of male for healing effects of coconut water and enhancing effects of coconut water. The conclusion oh healing effect of coconut water are mitigated the harmful effects of BPA on the male reproductive organs in rats. Enhancing effects of coconut water is coconut water alone enhanced reproductive organs in bucks.

Contraception practice among high risk postpartum women: does desire to avoid pregnancy matters?

Abstract: 1 in 3 pregnancies in Malaysia is unplanned. Prevalence of contraception used among Malaysian women remains low at 34-40%, and unmet need is around 20-27%. High risk postpartum women are those with chronic medical conditions, advanced maternal age, or prior adverse obstetric outcomes are at increased risk of maternal and fetal complications in subsequent pregnancies. Effective contraception during the postpartum period is essential to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) and psychological distress among urban-living older Malaysians

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a heightened psychological distress among older adults. This study examines the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the psychological distress among urban older adults in Malaysia. By using a sub-sample of Wave 2 Malaysia Ageing and Retirement Survey (MARS) witg 274 respondents and analysis based on principal component Analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression model with robust standard error, the results showed that factors such as socioeconomics status, employment, family relationship and media exposure as contributors to distress. Staying informed about COVID-19 is linked to reduced psychological distress.

Abstract: In conjunction with the 2024 National Mother's Day celebration, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) through the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) has conducted an online public opinion poll from 12 to 31 May 2024. In addition to finding out the issues and the current challenge of motherhood in managing the family and raising children, the focus of this study is to find out the level of mental well-being of mothers, and to know the extent of the important role and involvement of a mother in family institutions. With the theme "Terima KASIH Ibu", a total of 3,988 respondents consisting of mothers of Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above who have children were involved in this survey. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for the implementation of appropriate intervention programs towards the strengthening of family institutions.

Abstract: Over the past two decades, there has been a sharp increase in digital media usage among Malaysian children. The significant increase of online and screen time adds on to the issues of children online safety which has always posed a significant risk to parents, even before the pandemic. The opportunity given by parents to access gadgets and games has transformed the way children perceive, react, and adapt to the world change especially in the era of IR4.0. Thus, this study intends to examine the characteristics of digital resilience of children in the Malaysian context.

Abstract: Interpersonal communication is vital in every relationship. In this current situation of pandemic Covid 19, movement control orders (MCO) have been implemented by the government. Due to the MCO, people spend more time at home and the communication activities within the family might change as well. Thus, this research will conduct a qualitative method (in-depth interviews) to investigate the communication activities and the effects of those activities between spouses during the pandemic of Covid 19.
