Bridging knowledge gaps: validating the dementia knowledge scale for Malaysians

Abstract: Dementia is a significant and growing public health issue in Malaysia. However, public knowledge about dementia remains low. The Dementia Knowledge Assessment Scale (DKAS) is a validated tool developed to measure dementia knowledge. Although its has been translated into Malay language, the Malay-Singapore version is linguistically and culturally unsuitable for Malaysian population. The objective of this study is to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Malay-Singapore version of DKAS among general public in Malaysia/. Conlusion are DKAS-MY is a valid and reliable tool that can be used to assess dementia knowledge among general public in Malaysia. It can be used to guide public education campaign and inform local dementia related policies.

Breast Cancer Screening Via Mammography in Johor under Women Cancer Reproductive Awareness (WCARE) Campaign

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Malaysia with increasing observed in both urban and semi urban population. Johor has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Malaysia with 6,564 cases reported between 2012 and 2016 most detected at late stages. Mammography is the most effective method for early detection of breast cancer, particularly among women aged 40 years and above. In Johor mammography service are available through government hospital, private centers, National Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA) and Klinik Nur Sejahtera under the National Population and Family Development Board (NPFDB)

In this study, social and psychological factors have been identified as the main contributing factors to late marriage among women and men. This change has both positive and negative effects on their lifestyles, and late marriage has emerged as a significant issue for population growth even though it has some positive impacts.

The elderly in Malaysia (those aged 60 and above) will increase from a total of 2,875 in 2015, to 5,196 million in 2030 and 9,593 in 2050. Malaysia as a developing country will experience an ageing population in the near future.

Big data for measuring and achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals in Malaysia

Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have set 17 goals and 169 related targets to be achieved by 2030. In line to support SDGs indicators, Big Data plays a pivotal role to achieve the aspiration by providing real time information and evidence-based decision making through the predictive analytics. Thus, Big Data Analytics (BDA) has become a top priority for Malaysia’s government and one of the key pillars for national ICT development under the 11th Malaysia Plan. In becoming a leading statistical agency internationally by 2020, DOSM has taken efforts to utilise big data to improvise outcome and produce a more comprehensive and quality services. DOSM is vital to ensure the statistical products and services are able to fulfil users’ expectations. In tandem with DOSM's Transformation Plan 2015-2020 and aiming to make the most of the fast-growing volume of digital data, DOSM has initiated the implementation of Big Data Analytics under the project of StatsBDA. This presentation aims to highlight DOSM’s experiences in constructing official statistics by using big data which is aligned to the 2030 Agenda for SDGs. In addition, we will also share on the issues and challenges faced by DOSM pertinent to utilising the Big Data.
